You don’t need to be a President or Prime Minister to keep serving your country – helping the achieve equality. Recently Former Prime Minister of Haiti, Laurent Lamothe, was inducted into ‘Power Brand LIFE: Hall of Fame 2019’, at the Power Brands- London International Forum for Equality (LIFE) Summit in the UK.
Lamothe was honored for his outstanding achievements in combating inequality and human rights through his work with the Dr Louis G. Lamothe Foundation. The Foundation has made it it’s mission to fight against poverty and social exclusion in Haiti. Since its creation, the Foundation has promoted public consultation within the communities it operates, to pave the way forward for social, agricultural, and economic transformation in Haiti.
I took office as Prime Minister four years after the devastating 2010 earthquake in Haiti. On my first day I was confronted with the task of relocating 1.6 million Haitians. These citizens were confused, living squalor, and fearful of an uncertain future. 50% of these citizens were living in the capital city, in three years we were able to safely relocate 98% of them. In 2012 600 000 Haitian children did not go to school. Their parents could not afford the $200 a year tuition fee. We designed a free education program that put 1.4 million children in school and increased attendance from 58% to 90%. We gave Haitians the most basic of good policy-making – putting a child in school.
